Frequently Asked Questions Read the answers to some of our most frequently asked questions. If your question isn't answered, please contact us, we'll be happy to help. Question: Where is the Department of Health Care Administration and Policy chair's office? The department chair's office is in the Bigelow Health Sciences Building (#51 on the campus map), room 534 on the fifth floor. His telephone number is 895-4413. Question: How do I change my major? You can pick-up a Change of Major form from the Advising Center. Once you have completed the form you will take it to the department that your new major is in. Once the department chair signs your form you will take it to the registrar. Question: How do I register for classes? After you have received academic advising you may register for classes. You may register online. You will need the call numbers of all the courses you would like to register for. The call numbers are in the class schedule that comes out each semester. Question: Where do I get an undergraduate catalog and why do I need it? You can get an undergraduate catalog in the bookstore or view it online. It is important to have a catalog because it has all the information you need to know about UNLV. It also includes a description of all the courses UNLV offers and it will more than likely answer any question you have about the university. The catalog also lists each degree requirement based on your matriculation date (the date you were formally admitted to the university). The requirements you are to meet are based on your matriculation date. If the requirements change in the future they do not affect you if it was not listed in the catalog of your matriculation date. Each student should have a copy of this so you know the requirements that are specific to your major. Question: When I try to register for classes, the system says I have an academic hold? All new admits and transfer students are required to meet with an academic advisor prior to registering for classes. Upon completion of your advising session your hold will be removed so you may register for classes. To set up an appointment with your advisor call 895-5448. Question: I met with my advisor and the system still says I have a hold on my registration? Contact the registrar to see what type of hold you have on your registration. Sometimes students will have a hold if they haven't turned in their immunization records. Question: I tried to register for a class and the system said I did not meet the prerequisites? Look up the course in the undergraduate catalog and see what the prerequisites are for the course. You will need to complete whatever prerequisites are listed prior to enrollment. If you would like to have the prerequisites waived because you feel you took a course that was similar at another institution, contact the department that offers the course. You will need the description of the course you completed; it must be the institutions description not your summary of what the course entailed. Upon review of your completed course description the department has the ability to waive the prerequisites if you meet them through your completed course. Question: Can I get into a full class? In order to get into a full class you need to get instructor consent. The schedule of courses tells you who the instructor is for the class. If no instructor is listed contact the department who is offering the class, and ask who the instructor is. You will need to go to the instructor directly and request permission. You can do this during the instructor's office hours or on the first day that the class begins. If granted permission you need to get a form, fill it out, and obtain the instructor's signature. Once this form is signed you take it to the registrar and the registrar will enroll you into the class. Question: How do I find out about my scholarship? Any questions or information needed regarding scholarships need to be addressed by Student Financial Services . |
